Why Amber Riley Why???

Oh I am highly upset about the Amber Riley look for the SAG awards.  First let me explain my attachment.  I love Amber Riley, I feel she one of the very few plus size entertainers that the fashion world takes seriously.  She's young, fresh, and a vibrant girl who is definitely trying to come into her own with her personal style, but I think she was set up.   I frequently check out Badgley Mischka and never have I seen them make a dress so terrible.  First, I will say what I liked.  The dress had a nice silhouette. I actually liked her hair short, it was a nice change from the long hair that she wears.  Her face and body looked so cute.  But everything else was wretched, wretched, WRETCHED! (I maybe a little angry). The fabric looked cheap and that bow was horrendous and on top of everything else they just slapped a peplum on the dress. I would probably use this dress to scrub my floors with.  Did Badgley Mischka give her some B.S. dress because she wasn't a size 0?  I'm looking though the collections and I am not seeing it anywhere, like did they sew it yesterday.  Amber you were set up!!!

I would definitely not be surprised if they go in on her on E! Fashion Police.  Sound off on this dress and let me know if I am not seeing something that everyone else is seeing.

***Blog Update:  I just finished watching Fashion Police and 3 out 4 of the panelists loved Amber's look, so I guess the yays have it.  I hate this dress, but I felt like the Fashion Police was going to be the tie breaker in the comments, which were about 50/50.  So ladies enjoy your victory and you can't say I'm not a good sport.  Good convo!

  1. Hey..keep your cool. Hehe! I agree with you on this one although personally I do not think it's that bad. I find the bow too over the top. It screams! Aagghh! I think if they remove the bow, she would look even more stunning. That dress hugs her in all the right places.

  2. I actually kind of like it. It's not my style, but it fits her personality. I always feel as though she's in the same. kind of dress (long, cinches in the waist with a corset like top). I'm glad she changed it up. I don't think it's my favorite outfit, but apparently she liked it so kudos to her.

  4. I must agree, Im not feeling it...honestly, the bow makes it looks cheap! Maybe without the bow it would be a cute dress.

  5. I think that the bow was indended to sort of minimize the large girls in an effort to make her look better proportioned. The concept could have been achieved by just making the entire upper part of the dress black sans the bow! I like the peplum and the design just not the big bow. She's beautiful in anything! Kiah

  7. Aww man! I though she looked beautiful. It's not your traditional dress and I loved that she paired with with the ankle strap heels. It makes her body look amazing too!

  8. I think if they would've removed that damned bow it would've been cuter. Looking at the dress from the peplum down, it's actually not a bad dress. It's just that hideous bow.

  9. Gosh..this dress just screams Grandma to me!

  10. She is such a lovely vibrant girl, with dress her in black? Of all the colors of the rainbow? Let's hope this is a first time thing and that it will never repeat again.

  11. The bow is a hot mess but the shape works well for her. I DO NOT like that hair though. Looks like sponge rollers to me...ugh!!!

  12. I don't like the dress at all. The most it has going of it is that it accentuates her curves beautifully. Otherwise, the dress was a mistake. And I was dissappointed because she's usually dressed so amazingly. But I'd like to go back to what was said about Badgley Mischka, I don't think they know how to dress anyone who's not a size zero. Just look at the GrandMa dress they put Melissa McCarthy in for the Goldon Globes. A veteran design house should be able to come up with something, anything better.

  13. I love the dress. It is very retro-pinup to me. The hair is not my favorite, but I like that they did something different. I thought the overall design was very figure positive.

  14. I actually think it's cute, and I think it shows off her curves.
As much as I hate to disagree with ya, I think she rocked it.

  15. Really? I have seen worse dresses. I don't see what all the big hoopla is about.

  16. I think thi dress does wonders for her frame. I've hideous dresses on the red carpet and this isn't one of them.

  17. I read the post before seeing the picture and I was prepared to see something hideous but I actually like the dress. The bow is a little big, but it doesn't make it as bad as I was prepared to see from your description.

  18. Chastity, you're so funny! But my reaction was the same as yours: no bow! But I think Melissa McCarthy was way more set up than Amber! And it just kills me because she is so pretty and funny! Get a better stylist, my dear!

    1. @Denise -- Now you know Melissa didnt have a stylist and didnt care to have one either...LOL. I let Melissa slide because I know fashion isn't her thing and that's okay.

  19. I hated it at first, but it grew on me quickly. Love the length and shoes, which make it look younger and offsets the severity of the black color. Her body looked awesome in it.

    1. I thought the same... for me without the bow.. or something else.. but it grew!!

  20. Her hair was the real set up...OMG.

Sans the bow, the dress wouldve been gorgeous. She usually hits it on the nail though. *shrugs*

  21. My, my, my!
Actually, I REALLY like this look, because it's different, figure flattering and suits the sweet-yet-stylish vibe her hair and makeup are giving off!

And I seem to remember you wearing big bows (albeit on a cardigan) and peblum skirts... so why not Amber? Without both those details, the dress would be flagged as boring. I think enough plus size women in the spotlight are already guilty of that label!

At first I thought it might be better a bit shorter... but hard to say.

  22. I didn't think it was that bad but I could have done without the bow. Or maybe if the dress were longer.

  23. I have problem with that hem!! Ugh...it looks like Sister Kate at the First Baptist Church hemmed it in the choir room. Ugh. I think the silhouette is nice and could live with the bow if the peplum wasn't there.. It just looks tacked on. Her hair is good..finally I can see her neck.

  24. The dress isn't that bad. What kinda turned me off was the big ass bow right in front of her chest area. It came off looking tacky and a bit cheesy. But that's about it. Loved her hair, her makeup, the shoes. The silhouette is amazing! I like the faux peplum going on. And finally, the length is perfect.

Meanwhile, I was told about your blog. My friend said I should check it out because to her your style reminds her of my style. iBlush. You have a great blog.

  25. It is truly ugly and her hair was ugly as well. Setup... Nope, she wore it, so she must have liked it... The straps look cheap, that bow looks like a cheap add one, but I like her shoes...

  26. I am with you... I love her! However, this dress is awful.

  27. I think she looked fantastic. Her dress was youthful without being immodest. And without the bow, her dress would looked too dowdy. The shoes went perfectly.

I can't believe you would say that about her outfit after you just ranted about how you wear things to be fashion forward, even if they aren't flattering. Can you honestly say that her ensemble is worse than your hot pink Hammer pants outfit (with a vest. Hm.)? Please.
