With the increase in plus size women in Hollywood and in the music industry, the award season has proven something to me. This may be controversial, but I feel like some of these industry plus size woman do not think they deserve the best. Show after show, I am seeing plus size women
in dresses that are substandard. I feel
like some of these woman are taking dresses that they can get, instead of the dresses
that they deserve. I have been watching award shows all my life and even the worst dress individuals have
gowns/dresses that are properly tailored.
Melissa McCartney in Marina Rinaldi
I loved that Melissa went with a plus size designer and I actually like the color. Let's first state the obvious, if the designer is plus size shouldn't the designer know how a dress should be constructed for a plus size woman. Looked at the botched lining & the tacked on sleeves. So you are telling me that Marina Rinaldi saw her in this dress and didn't see that flawed seam. She saw it...I guarantee.
A few weeks ago I talked about Amber Riley's dress and some felt that I was hard on her. I just felt like no one straight size would have been caught dead in her dress. Yeah it was cute for a plus size dress, but do you want just a dress that is just okay for the fat girl. Come on! I definitely think I deserve better and I think you and every plus size girl in the world deserves better. These actresses & singers are at the top of their game right now and they are getting dresses with tacked on sleeves & add on straps. I am a believer in altering your garments to your liking, but it should look like it belongs and not an obvious add on.
I will say I think Octavia Spencer looked really good. Her gown was by Tadashi. Tadashi is known for making gowns in plus sizes as well. The gown was a great fit, I thought the beading was pretty. This look was simple & glamorous. So good for Octavia for looking the way she deserves to look.

I LOVE Melissa McCartney, she is just a joy lol....and Octavia looked beautiful, the dressed slimmed her perfectly, but that picture above though...I wish she would've smiled lol. CONGRATS, HUGE CONGRATS to her! she deserved it!
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! Melissa McCartney's dress!! I agree with you, just because you are plus sized does not mean you shouldn't expect the best. I don't even want to go there on Sherri Shepherd's dress (which looked just like Melissa's).
ReplyDeleteMelissa's gown looks to matronly too to me. Octavia's is ok but a bit dated. IMO, designers are far behind on what looks good on and for plus sized women.
ReplyDeleteGood topic and very timely....
ReplyDeleteYou hit the nail right on the head! We do deserve better!. Queen Latifah could teach these ladies a thing or two about dressing for an awards show!!!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of Queen Latifah, because she always looks flawless on the red carpet.
DeleteI totally agree with you about many plus-sized stars of today.
ReplyDeleteI was just as bothered by Adele's Grammy dress because I could see the tacky lining near her neckline in a v shape while the dress was scooped neck. First of all, why did she even require that lining? And if she requested it, why not make it follow the shape of the dress?
I was also very disappointed in Melissa McCartney's dress. I don't think I've seen her in a formal dress that I liked.
I totally understand that women (not just plus sized women) have insecurities and parts of their bodies that they are not comfortable with. But I really wish that there existed a plus-size superstar who would brave the red carpet in a dress without giant sleeves and uncomfortably high necklines.

Ms. Valentine, I couldn't agree with you more! It's sad and frustrating, but true: so many of us plus-sized women think we don't deserve . . . anything, really. And it makes me crazy that such a lovely and talented woman like Melissa McCarthy chose to dress like she did on Oscar night! She is an Academy Award-nominated actress, for pete's sake! On the other hand, Octavia Spencer has looked terrific all through awards season, and one of the reasons is that she wore a lot of Tadashi Shoji.
ReplyDeleteI liked Octavia's better than Melissa's. Melissa's color was great but there was something not there.
ReplyDeleteAlso, keep in mind that these ladies are 40 or over (as is Queen Latifah, although she's not an easy comparison because she's 5'10" compared to Octavia's 5'2" and Melissa's 5'3.") and probably want to dress age-appropriately. Quite a few older women are a bit more modest in their dressing.
Honestly, with the busy life she leads, I felt like maybe Melissa did not get herself fitted. Missing or skipping the fitting for a dress for your prom, wedding, or events like this - especially with so much detail and flowy material could be a serious problem.
ReplyDeleteOctavia however did that! She looked wonderful.
